The purpose of the Recreation Facilities Association of British Columbia (RFABC) is to promote general interest, education, safe operating standards, professionalism and support among recreation facility operators, Commission and Board members in the successful operations of arenas, auditoriums, community centres, swimming pools, stadiums, parks and other recreation facilities.

The Association is dedicated to excellence in education and to that end ensures its courses are continually reviewed and revised so that all information taught is up-to-date and relevant. Excellence in education also means the RFABC strives to ensure all courses exceed industry standards and competitive offerings. Pool Operator Level I and II, Arena Ice Maker's, Building Service Worker I and II, Refrigeration Safety Awareness,  Ice Facility Operator, Refrigeration Operator, Chlorine Gas Safe Handling, Ice skating Instructor course are among those quality education opportunities offered. 


Pool Operator Level 1

This course provides training for those involved or wishing to be involved in swimming pool operations. In the municipal aquatics field and private sector, this course meets the requirements, as outlined by the Provincial Health Authority for meeting the minimum Health Act training requirement. Topics include water circulation equipment, pool volume calculations, basic chlorine chemistry, Langlier Saturation Index, water balance, water testing, safe handling and storage of pool chemicals.

Pool Operator Level 2

Students learn to deal with more complex pool problems and develop the skills to solve them. Topics include problem solving, advanced chemistry, energy conservation, trouble shooting, new technology, risk management and program maintenance systems. Time will be spent of the current Health Regulations and how they impact pool operations including the Pool Safety Plan.

Successful candidates completing a written exam will receive a Level II Pool Operator Certificate. This certificate is recognized by the BC Ministry of Health and Municipalities in B.C.

Prerequisite: Students must have successfully completed RFABC Pool operator Level 1.

Refrigeration Safety Awareness (RSA)

This course prepares students to write the Technical Safety BC provincial Refrigeration Safety Awareness (RSA) exam. The course is suited for personnel working in any regulated refrigeration facility but whose job duties do not include operation and or repair of the refrigeration plant or for Ice Facility Operator (IFO) or Refrigeration Operator (RO) certificate holders seeking a refresher course on plant safety.
